DIY Turmeric Face Masks for Different Skin Types

Acne, dark spots, wrinkles, dark circles – these are just some of the many skin problems that millions of people from all over the world suffer from. Aside from damaging the skin, these annoying skin issues also negatively affect self-esteem and confidence. As a solution, hundreds of commercially made beauty products are being invented to prevent and minimize these conditions. Although some may be effective, these beauty products commonly contain chemicals and other harsh ingredients that can do more harm than good to the skin.

Fortunately, there are also a wide array of natural ingredients that are proven to treat skin problems. One of these all natural ingredients is turmeric, which is a golden yellow herb that contains high levels of antioxidants for healthy and glowing skin. In addition to being a common food spice, turmeric is considered as one to the most effective natural remedies for various skin problems such as acne, dark spots, and wrinkles.

DIY Turmeric Face Mask

One of the best ways to take advantage of turmeric’s benefits for the skin is by preparing it as a facial mask. In addition to its pro-skin properties, mixing turmeric with other natural ingredients such as honey, milk and natural oils, multiplies its effects to the facial skin. Below are the best ways to prepare turmeric as a facial mask.

Combination Skin – Turmeric, Honey and Milk Mask

If you are suffering from combination skin (oily and dry), this mask is the best treatment. For mild to the moderate dry skin, milk is one of the most effective ways to get full hydration. Milk is rich in proteins and other substances that are healthy for the skin. Aside from preventing skin dehydration, milk also treats flaky skin.

On the other hand, honey is the ideal choice for treating oily skin that is prone to developing acne and skin blemishes. Honey is rich with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that prevent acne and other bacterial infection in the skin. When both these ingredients are mixed with turmeric, the result is a facial mask that suits oily and dry skin.

Mix 1 teaspoon of powdered turmeric with 1 teaspoon of raw honey. Add ½ cup of fresh milk and mix thoroughly. Make sure to attain a pasty or creamy mixture before application. You can also put the mixture in a freezer for about five minutes before application to get the cooling effect. Liberally apply the mixture to the entire face. Make sure to cover areas that are mostly affected by acne, blemishes, and wrinkles. Leave for about 20 minutes before rinsing off with running water.

You can remove the mask using a mild cleanser. Apply a light moisturizer if dryness is experienced. Use this mask one or twice a week until acne and skin blemishes are completely gone.



Acne Prone Skin – Turmeric and Yogurt Mask

As mentioned above, turmeric is a must have ingredient when battling with chronic acne. Turmeric’s superior antibacterial properties work perfectly with moderate to severe acne issues. When applied regularly, turmeric effectively kills and prevents the spread of acne-causing bacteria. Similar with turmeric, Yogurt is another natural ingredient that is highly regarded for its ability to treat various skin problems including acne. When used regularly, yogurt has been proven to reduce redness brought about by inflamed and infected acne. Yogurt also promotes faster healing process of cystic acne that usually develops scarring.

Mix 1 teaspoon of powdered turmeric with a 1 to 2 teaspoons of fresh yogurt. Mix well and apply liberally to the entire face or on areas with skin problems. Aside from treating acne, yogurt also minimizes the appearance of dark circles around the eyes. To use as an eye treatment, put the mixture for a few minutes in a freezer. When cold enough, apply under the eyes by using light tapping motion. You can also massage lightly for several minutes to help the skin absorb the nutrients. Leave for 15 minutes before rinsing off with running water or wiping off with a clean cloth or cotton ball. Repeat application 2 to 3 times a week or every time you feel puffiness around the eyes.

To treat severe acne, apply the mask at least four times a week preferably before taking a shower. If the allergic reaction is experienced, immediately discontinue use and have your skin checked by a dermatologist.

Severe Dry Skin with Acne, Dark Spots, and Wrinkles – Turmeric with Argan/Coconut Oil Mask

When suffering from severe dryness, your skin is forced to work double time to maintain proper ph level. As a result, the skin becomes more susceptible to developing various skin issues such as acne and wrinkles. To prevent these problems, you need to hydrate more frequently using natural moisturizers such as coconut oil, which is considered as one of the most effective natural moisturizing ingredients. Aside from moisture, coconut oil also minimizes the appearance of dark spots and lightens blemishes.

Like coconut oil, argan oil is another natural ingredient that is quickly becoming a must have in maintaining healthy skin. Although pricier compared to other oils, Argan oil provides a high level of moisturization and promotes faster skin renewal caused by skin-damaging free radicals.

Mix 1 to 2 teaspoons of powdered turmeric with 2 to 3 drops of coconut and argan oils. Add a few drops of water until you attain a creamy or pasty texture. Mix well. Liberally apply to the entire face or use spot treatment especially on areas with skin problems. Leave for 20 minutes before rinsing off with running water. Repeat these steps at least 3 times a week until all skin problems are gone.

As a maintenance treatment, you can also use any of these oils to prevent and treat skin dryness. Apply 2 to 3 drops on the face preferably in the morning after taking a shower. Spread evenly on the entire face while using light massage motions. You can include these steps as the first part of your daily beauty regimen.



Sensitive Skin – Turmeric, cucumber and Rosewater Mask

If you have extra sensitive skin, you must always be careful about the different beauty products you use on your face. The slightest chemical reaction can lead to skin issues such as acne and red spots, which is why using natural ingredients that are healthy for the skin is the best alternative. A very gentle but effective natural ingredient that is a staple in skin maintenance is cucumber, which is highly sought for its cooling and calming effects. Furthermore, cucumber is ideal for treating inflamed skin caused by acne.

In addition to cucumber, rose water is a highly effective yet non-allergic ingredient that is perfect for maintaining the skin’s proper ph level. Rosewater also promotes faster repair of damaged skin cells.

Cut a large cucumber into thin slices and blend until the liquid form is attained. Mix liquid cucumber with 1 to 2 teaspoons of powdered turmeric and 5 to 10 drops of rosewater. Stir thoroughly. Apply on the entire face and leave for 20 minutes before rinsing off with running water. You can repeat these steps 4 to 5 times a week or whenever you feel that your skin is too dry or oily.
