Garlic is one of the most popular herbs that can be used not just in cooking but also as remedy to some common health problems. This herb is related to onions, leeks, and chives. It originated from Siberia and was transported to other countries and had spread out to the different parts of the globe for more than 5000 years now. Garlic has been used for culinary purposes as well as in the treatment of several health conditions.

There is a chemical compound found in this herb that is known to play a huge role in providing treatments to several diseases. This compound is called allicin and this is the same compound that you can smell from the garlic. Some like the idea of reducing the smell of the garlic by aging it which removes the important uses of allicin. However, aging garlic have also different benefits.

It is said that chopping or crushing this herb before heating it when cooking dishes is more effective because it activates the important enzymes and allows it to convert to allicin effectively. Aside from allicin, quercetin is also a useful chemical compound that helps treat some forms of diseases.

Some of the important nutrients you can get from garlic are Vitamin B-6, Vitamins C, copper, calcium, iron, selenium, and manganese. Garlic is also rich in flavonoid anti-oxidants such as beta carotene and zea xanthin. You can also benefit from garlic’s anti-fungal, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory effects.

Below are some of the common conditions where this herb can be used as remedy. The natural compounds present in garlic have almost the same effects from the chemical-based medications you use. Regular consumption of garlic will give you the best result.

1. High Blood Pressure

People suffering from high blood pressure can benefit from consuming this superfood. It has significant impact in lowering cholesterol levels especially if consuming of about 4 fresh garlic cloves a day is done. This is the equivalent amount of allicin needed to treat high blood pressure.

2. Heart Diseases

Most heart diseases such as strokes and heart attacks are caused by high blood pressure. When proper blood level is maintained, heart ailments can be reduced significantly. This herb helps combat the bad cholesterols by lowering it while the good cholesterols are unaffected by its effects.

3. Different Types of Cancers

Recent studies show that garlic helps kill cancer cells such as leukemia. It also helps in slowing down the development of tumor in the colon, stomach, bladder, and prostate. Those people who often eat this tasty herb as part of their daily meal or as part of their maintenance have lower risk of getting lung cancer too.

Allicin that is found in garlic works together with quercetin, which is another compound which has cancer-fighting abilities. 4. Vaginal Yeast Infection

Due to its antibacterial and antiviral effects, those who suffer from vaginal yeast infection can use this to help treat their condition. It helps boost immune system and fights off bacterial infections. It is also known to kill yeast and when detected on during the early stage, treatment would be much simpler and quicker. By applying a fresh peeled garlic clove on the surface of the vagina at bed time, yeast infection could go off overnight. However if the yeast infection has been occurring for quite some time, several days of treatment may be necessary.

5. Tooth Ache and Tooth Sensitivity

This might give you a stinging sensation due to the fact that you are going to apply a piece of raw garlic on the affected area. You can do the following options:

Combining garlic and salt
Crush the garlic and sprinkle some salt. Apply directly on the tooth and leave for several minutes then gargle with warm salted water.

Cutting the cloves into half
Simply cut a clove of garlic and rub one of the halves (the cut part) to your aching tooth. Do this gently for about 10 minutes and then chew the remaining garlic to get more of its juice and add more healing effects. This will also help to strengthen the immunity of the affected tooth.

Use as mouthwash
To do this, you need to crush at least 4 cloves of garlic and place them in a cup of water. Add a teaspoon of salt then pour in some hot water to make a cup of this solution. Mix and leave the solution until warm enough to use as mouthwash. Do as often as needed.

Garlic powder
If fresh garlic isn’t available, applying garlic powder on the tooth can also help. Just use a cotton bud with some water to absorb the powder. You can also make a paste by adding a few drops of water. Leave the compounds for several minutes and reapply until the pain subsides. Rinse with warm salted water after application.

6. Brain Functions and Prevention of Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia

Garlic is rich in antioxidant which helps combat the damage brought by free radicals. These free radicals are the ones behind premature aging process. It works in a way that it releases antioxidants to support our body’s natural shield against these oxidative damages from the free radicals. The reduction of bad cholesterol combined with the antioxidants helps activate brain functions and reduces the risk of acquiring mental health conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
