Safety of natural home remedies
Every year, thousands upon thousands of adults are changing their mindset and turning, or at least, giving a second look at home remedies in hopes of treating their medical conditions. Natural home remedies provide many benefits, but they are not without disadvantages. One major disadvantage is the lack of proper regulation, as a result, a consumer may become a subject of exaggerated claims provided by the manufacturer or retailer. Another, less thought of disadvantage, is the fact that natural home remedies do have side effects.
Despite a general public perception that natural products do not carry side effects, the fact is that nearly any substance, whether natural or not, will carry side effects to various extent. Those who will disagree with me on this should think of some well-known “natural” substances, such as marijuana, belladonna alkaloids, amanita mushroom toxin, etc. What about an extremely common naturally occurring element, potassium? This seemingly benign element will cause heart dysrhythmia, potentially leading to death if consumed in large quantity. Therefore, it is important to keep in mind that simply because natural remedies are “natural” they may cause side effects and potentially even death. It is crucial to always consult a medical professional before using any of the so-called “natural home remedies.”
